Bocci is a Vancouver-based design research studio, lab, and factory known for its experimental relationship with light, material, craft, and atmosphere. Across several years of collaboration, I helped shape the visual identity of the brand through process films, institutional videos, product photography, and architectural imagery.

The work focused on more than the documentation of objects. It was about communicating a practice: the experiments, gestures, spaces, and material processes behind the finished pieces. Many of these films and images became part of Bocci’s public identity and were featured in leading design and architecture publications around the world.

This collaboration became an important foundation for my own practice — working as a designer and architect to help other creatives express the deeper narrative of their work, build cultural value, and create an emotional connection with their audience.

This film began with Paolo Ferrari’s observation that cinema was one of his main inspirations for designing space. In response, I approached the project not as a conventional corporate video, but as a cinematic portrait of a practice.

Shot on an ARRI Alexa with vintage Cooke lenses, the film used framing, lighting, composition, and the placement of people in space to reflect the atmosphere and drama of cinema. At the time, many of the studio’s most important projects had not yet been built, so the challenge was to express the practice through limited material: one completed space, the office, and the team.

The result was less a record of finished work than a portrait of a methodology and a direction. Paolo later told me they had gotten emotional when they saw the film,
because they felt it captured something essential.
Not only what the studio had made, but what it believed in.
